Ausperl Horticultural Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that has been heat-expanded into lightweight, accordion-shaped flakes. The color ranges from warm gold to sandy brown depending on grade. It is sterile, pH neutral, odorless, and does not decompose or compact over time. Available in three grades: Grade 2 (2–4 mm) with a finer particle size; Grade 3 (3–6 mm) as a medium particle; and Grade 4 (5–8 mm) as a coarser particle. All three grades hold several times their weight in water while keeping air pockets open around roots, so soil stays consistently moist without becoming waterlogged. Available in 5L for home use and 100L for larger projects or regular mixing.

Each grade suits different tasks:

  • Grade 2 (2–4 mm): Best for starting seeds and raising delicate seedlings at home, keeping young roots consistently moist in a sterile, lightweight medium
  • Grade 3 (3–6 mm): The go-to for rooting cuttings and mixing into potting soil for indoor moisture-loving plants like ferns, calathea, peace lilies, and philodendrons at around 30% by volume to improve moisture balance without compaction
  • Grade 4 (5–8 mm): Added to outdoor container mixes and raised garden beds where stronger aeration and drainage are needed, and for larger indoor plants that benefit from a chunkier, more open mix

This is definitely an excellent potting mix!

Exactly 1 month since repot. This is a propagated anthurium and suffice to say, it absolutely loves the soil and the net pot.

The soil is a good base and very suitable for adding amendments to suit the needs of your plant. I tried many soilless mixes, I like this one the most, for me it is the most versatile and easiest to use. Wish it came in a smaller 2L pack though. Good price and was delivered fast.
