Handcrafted Since 1942

Raw clay pots from Bergs Potter start with premium Italian clay, fired at high heat, and nothing else. No chemical treatments, no shortcuts, just clay shaped and burned the way potters have done it for generations.

Left unglazed like this, the terracotta breathes. It weathers naturally and earns a patina over months and years, each pot picking up its own small history of sun, water and soil. The saucers get a waterproof finish underneath, so mould never gets a foothold.

Set one on the dining table, let it catch the light on a windowsill, or pick a larger size to hold a plant on your wooden or tile floors. However you use it, it brings something honest and earthy into the room.

"If your plants could speak, they would tell you that there’s nothing better than a quality clay pot. Proper drainage gives their roots room to breathe, and superior clay helps keep in the moisture they need."

Timeless Designs

Every Bergs Potter design carries a piece of the past with it. The shapes nod to old traditions and heirloom pieces, built on the Scandinavian design legacy that's been passed down through the brand for years.

The ideas behind each pot come from all over: royal gardens, a flea market find in France, years of botanical study, the clean lines Scandinavian design is known for. Bring all that together and you get something distinctly Danish, classic and considered, never chasing a trend.

Each design has its own story behind it, and each one is made to last well beyond a single lifetime.

From the beginning

1942

Once upon a time in Copenhagen

Victor Berg, an eager young accountant, inherited a ceramics shop in Copenhagen.

Wanting to breathe a bit of life and colour into the war-depressed lives of his fellow Copenhageners, he decided to add flowers to the shop.

The aged ceramics filled with beautiful, fresh flowers soon made the store a popular place to visit and shop.

1945

Two new Bergs join the business

Demand for flowers and pots grew swiftly, and Victor Berg realized the business needed to expand beyond that first shop, so he opened two more shops in the city—one in Copenhagen's most famous shopping street.

As Victor's business grew, so too did his family. Steffen and Christine (Sysser) Berg soon came into the world and joined this flowery fairytale.

The daily family chores

Steffen started to help his father in the shops from age 7, and Sysser later joined him. Eventually, Steffen became the merchant who went to the flower market and managed stock in the basement of the original shop.

He recalls how he used to pound the floor twice with a broomstick before going down the stairs to make sure all the rats scurried away.

Sysser was the creative head of the family, with a flair for new trends.

The legacy is passed on

After Berg Senior died, Steffen and Sysser knew early on that they would carry on their father's passion for flowers and pots.

Like their father, they too were enthusiastic about pottery, history and archeology, which took them on a search through historical sites and the historical archives.

There, they stumbled upon their first great inspiration in an old garden shed. There, they found an elegant flowerpot that gave the inspiration for Berg's flagship: the Copenhagen Pot. This line of pots was—and still is—produced from the finest terracotta, just like royal potters had used centuries before.

2012

The third generation

After Steffen and Sysser successfully discovered the skilled clay craftsmen and imaginative pottery artisans they'd hoped to find in order to start larger-scale production on a wider range of inspired designs from Italy, the company changed hands again.

This time, Victor Berg Jr., Steffan's son, and two friends of the Berg family—Martin and Frits—took the helm.

Martin and Frits were responsible for daily operations, with Martin as entrepreneur and Frits working full time as the accountant.

Over the years, the boys learned how to run a company as they fell in love with terracotta, becoming passionately invested in the material's roots, qualities, and the Italian culture behind it.

A Strawberry farm and an old pub

For many years, the Bergs Potter brand flourished thanks to an expanding resonance around the world driven by Martin and Frits.

In 2014 the warehouse was moved to an old strawberry farm north of Copenhagen, and in 2016 Bergs Potter transformed an old pub in the center of Frederiksberg into their main office.

From here, the company continues to grow thanks to a devoted team of salespeople, warehouse employees, and craftspeople.
